After opening on a beta service in May 2005 YouTube.com was trafficking around 30,000 viewers a day in just months of time. After launching six months later they would be hosting well over two million viewers a day on the website. By March 2006 the site had more than 25 million videos uploaded and was generating around 20,000 uploads a day. During the summer of 2006, YouTube was one of the fastest growing sites on the World Wide Web, hosting more than 65,000 new video uploads.

However, this did not come without any problems, the rapid growth in users meant YouTube had to keep up with it technologically speaking. They needed new equipment and wider broadband internet connection to serve an ever growing audience. The increasing copyright infringement problems and lack in commercializing YouTube eventually led to outsourcing to Google who later failed in their own video platform "Google Video". It was ranked the fifth-most-popular website on Alexa, far out-pacing even MySpace's rate of growth. The website averaged nearly 20 million visitors per month according to Nielsen/NetRatings, with around 44% female and 56% male visitors.

According to the website Hitwise.com, YouTube commanded up to 64% of the UK online video market. Through this period, YouTube tried several new ways to generate revenue beyond advertisements. In 2013, YouTube launched a pilot program for content providers to offer premium, subscription-based channels within the platform. This effort was discontinued in January 2018 and relaunched in June, with US$4.99 channel subscriptions.

These channel subscriptions complemented the existing Super Chat ability, launched in 2017, which allows viewers to donate between $1 and $500 to have their comment highlighted. In 2014, YouTube announced a subscription service known as "Music Key," which bundled ad-free streaming of music content on YouTube with the existing Google Play Music service. YouTube also released YouTube Music, a third app oriented towards streaming and discovering the music content hosted on the YouTube platform.

Contrary to popular belief, YouTube was not the first video-sharing site on the Internet; Vimeo was launched in November 2004, though that site remained a side project of its developers from CollegeHumor at the time and did not grow much, either. The week of YouTube's launch, NBC-Universal's Saturday Night Live ran a skit "Lazy Sunday" by The Lonely Island. Besides helping to bolster ratings and long-term viewership for Saturday Night Live, "Lazy Sunday"'s status as an early viral video helped establish YouTube as an important website. Unofficial uploads of the skit to YouTube drew in more than five million collective views by February 2006 before they were removed when NBCUniversal requested it two months later based on copyright concerns. Despite eventually being taken down, these duplicate uploads of the skit helped popularize YouTube's reach and led to the upload of more third-party content. The site grew rapidly and, in July 2006, the company announced that more than 65,000 new videos were being uploaded every day, and that the site was receiving 100 million video views per day.

The domain name "YouTube.com" was activated on February 14, 2005, with video upload options being integrated on April 23, 2005, after being named "Tune In, Hook Up" ─ the original idea of Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim. The concept was an online dating service that ultimately failed but had an exceptional video and uploading platform. After the infamous Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson Halftime show incident, the three creators realized they couldn't find any videos of it on the internet, after noticing that this type of platform did not exist they made the changes to become the first major video sharing platform.

The idea of the new company was for non-computer experts to be able to use a simple interface that allowed the user to publish, upload and view streaming videos through standard web browsers and modern internet speeds. Ultimately, creating an easy to use video streaming platform that wouldn't stress out the new internet users of the early 2000s. The first YouTube video, titled Me at the zoo, was uploaded on April 23, 2005, and shows co-founder Jawed Karim at the San Diego Zoo and currently has over 120 million views and almost 5 million likes. Hurley was behind more of the looks of the website, he used his art skills to create the logo and designed the look of the website. Chen made sure the page actually worked and that there would be no issues with the uploading and playback process.

Karim was a programmer and helped in making sure the initial website got put together properly and helped in both design and programming. Since its purchase by Google, YouTube has expanded beyond the website into mobile apps, network television, and the ability to link with other services. Video categories on YouTube include music videos, video clips, news, short films, feature films, documentaries, audio recordings, movie trailers, teasers, live streams, vlogs, and more.

Since around 2015, established media corporations such as Disney, ViacomCBS, and WarnerMedia have created and expanded their corporate YouTube channels to advertise to a larger audience. These are some of the findings of the PEJ's New Media Index for the week of May 4-8. The index is an effort to monitor the content appearing in new media platforms. The biggest element of this Index is what appears in the more than 100 million blogs and other social media web pages concerned with national news and public affairs tracked by two monitoring sites, Technorati and Icerocket.

Both track the commentary online by identifying what news stories bloggers and other websites link to. Each weekday, PEJ captures the top linked-to stories and analyzes their content. It then compares those findings with the results of its weekly analysis of more mainstream media, the weekly News Coverage Index. The Project also tracks the most popular news videos on YouTube each week. YouTube has been criticized for using an algorithm that gives great prominence to videos that promote conspiracy theories, falsehoods and incendiary fringe discourse. After YouTube drew controversy for giving top billing to videos promoting falsehoods and conspiracy when people made breaking-news queries during the 2017 Las Vegas shooting, YouTube changed its algorithm to give greater prominence to mainstream media sources.

In 2018, it was reported that YouTube was again promoting fringe content about breaking news, giving great prominence to conspiracy videos about Anthony Bourdain's death. The company also attempted to create products to appeal to specific kinds of viewers. YouTube released a mobile app known as YouTube Kids in 2015, designed to provide an experience optimized for children. It features a simplified user interface, curated selections of channels featuring age-appropriate content, and parental control features. Also in 2015, YouTube launched YouTube Gaming—a video gaming-oriented vertical and app for videos and live streaming, intended to compete with the Amazon.com-owned Twitch.

The first targeted advertising on the site came in February 2006 in the form of participatory video ads, which were videos in their own right that offered users the opportunity to view exclusive content by clicking on the ad. The first such ad was for the Fox show Prison Break and solely appeared above videos on Paris Hilton's channel. Participatory video ads were designed to link specific promotions to specific channels rather than advertising on the entire platform at once. The Executive Director has been assisted by a full-time Administrator, 2-3 undergraduate students, and one graduate student. The Society wishes to secure similarly favorable terms under a new five-year contract. Preference will be given to proposals that demonstrate support from a Dean, museum or library director, or equivalent, the existence of an active community in the history of science, and the existence of a flourishing graduate, undergraduate, or fellowship program.

Syrian activists fear all that history could be erased as YouTube moves to rein in violent content. In the past few months, the online video giant has implemented new policies to remove material considered graphic or supporting terrorism, and hundreds of thousands of videos from the conflict suddenly disappeared without notice. Activists say crucial evidence of human rights violations risks being lost — as well as an outlet to the world that is crucial for them. In September 2016, after introducing an enhanced notification system to inform users of these violations, YouTube's policies were criticized by prominent users, including Phillip DeFranco and Vlogbrothers.

DeFranco argued that not being able to earn advertising revenue on such videos was "censorship by a different name". A YouTube spokesperson stated that while the policy itself was not new, the service had "improved the notification and appeal process to ensure better communication to our creators". Boing Boing reported in 2019 that LGBT keywords resulted in demonetization.

YouTube entered into a marketing and advertising partnership with NBC in June 2006. In March 2007, it struck a deal with BBC for three channels with BBC content, one for news and two for entertainment. In November 2008, YouTube reached an agreement with MGM, Lions Gate Entertainment, and CBS, allowing the companies to post full-length films and television episodes on the site, accompanied by advertisements in a section for U.S. viewers called "Shows". The move was intended to create competition with websites such as Hulu, which features material from NBC, Fox, and Disney. In November 2009, YouTube launched a version of "Shows" available to UK viewers, offering around 4,000 full-length shows from more than 60 partners. In January 2010, YouTube introduced an online film rentals service, which is only available to users in the United States, Canada, and the UK as of 2010.

In September 2020, YouTube announced that it would be launching a beta version of a new platform of 15-second videos, similar to TikTok, called YouTube Shorts. The platform was first tested in India but as of March 2021 has expanded to other countries including the United States with videos now able to be up to 1 minute long. The platform is not a standalone app, but is integrated into the main YouTube app. Like TikTok, it gives users access to built-in creative tools, including the possibility of adding licensed music to their videos. In February 2019, YouTube vlogger Matt Watson identified a "wormhole" that would cause the YouTube recommendation algorithm to draw users into this type of video content, and make all of that user's recommended content feature only these types of videos.

Most of these videos had comments from sexual predators commenting with timestamps of when the children were shown in compromising positions or otherwise making indecent remarks. In some cases, other users had re-uploaded the video in unlisted form but with incoming links from other videos, and then monetized these, propagating this network. In the wake of the controversy, the service reported that they had deleted over 400 channels and tens of millions of comments, and reported the offending users to law enforcement and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. During November 2011, the Google+ social networking site was integrated directly with YouTube and the Chrome web browser, allowing YouTube videos to be viewed from within the Google+ interface. In December 2011, YouTube launched a new version of the site interface, with the video channels displayed in a central column on the home page, similar to the news feeds of social networking sites. It is based on a similar user interface was put to test as early as July 2011 under the code name "Cosmic Panda".

At the same time, a new version of the YouTube logo was introduced with a darker shade of red, which was the first change in design since October 2006. In 2012, the company vastly expanded the number of creators it allowed to make money from ads on their channels, provided they stayed within some loose boundaries of taste. This made YouTube unique among social platforms, in that it was possible for popular creators to earn a full-time living directly from the platform. YouTube built an algorithm that recommended those creators' videos based on how engaging they were.

Then it stepped back, let the machines run and let a thousand media moguls bloom. It is a story of heroism and sacrifice that would ultimately claim 15 million lives and profoundly change the world forever. Several channel owners told YouTube and Google that their channels' content was directed to children, and in other instances YouTube's own content rating system identified content as directed to children. In addition, according to the complaint, YouTube manually reviewed children's content from its YouTube platform to feature in its YouTube Kids app. Despite this knowledge of channels directed to children on the YouTube platform, YouTube served targeted advertisements on these channels. According to the complaint, it even told one advertising company that it did not have users younger than 13 on its platform and therefore channels on its platform did not need to comply with COPPA.

The ban was lifted in January 2016 after YouTube launched a Pakistan-specific version. Businesses, schools, government agencies, and other private institutions often block social media sites, including YouTube, due to its bandwidth limitations and the site's potential for distraction.

YouTube Kids is an American children's video app developed by YouTube, a subsidiary of Google. The app was developed in response to parental and government scrutiny on the content available to children. The app provides a version of the service-oriented towards children, with curated selections of content, parental control features, and filtering of videos deemed inappropriate viewing for children aged under 13, 8 or 5 depending on the age grouping chosen. YouTube has a set of community guidelines aimed to reduce abuse of the site's features. The uploading of videos containing defamation, pornography, and material encouraging criminal conduct is forbidden by YouTube's "Community Guidelines".

Generally prohibited material includes sexually explicit content, videos of animal abuse, shock videos, content uploaded without the copyright holder's consent, hate speech, spam, and predatory behavior. YouTube relies on its users to flag the content of videos as inappropriate, and a YouTube employee will view a flagged video to determine whether it violates the site's guidelines. In 2015, the company began natively supporting 360-degree video and it has since allowed for live streaming of 360° video at up to 4K resolution.

Citing the limited number of users who watched more than 90-degrees, the company began supporting an alternative stereoscopic video format known as VR180 which it said was easier to produce. The company now allows users to watch any video using virtual reality headsets. Between November 2005 and April 2006, the company raised money from a variety of investors with Sequoia Capital, $11.5 million, and Artis Capital Management, $8 million, being the largest two. YouTube's early headquarters were situated above a pizzeria and Japanese restaurant in San Mateo, California. In February 2005, the company activated The first video was uploaded April 23, 2005. Titled Me at the zoo, it shows co-founder Jawed Karim at the San Diego Zoo and can still be viewed on the site.

In May, the company launched a public beta and by November, a Nike ad featuring Ronaldinho became the first video to reach one million total views. The site launched officially on December 15, 2005, by which time the site was receiving 8 million views a day. Clips at the time were limited to 100 megabytes, as little as 30 seconds of footage. Google's ownership of YouTube has also changed its business model; it no longer generates revenue from advertisements alone. YouTube and approved creators participate in Google's AdSense program, which generates more revenue for both parties.

Thank you for coming in at nine o'clock, it's an early start. As Kevin mentioned, my name is Kirsty Nathoo and I am the CFO here at Y Combinator. I've actually helped now, 2,000 companies almost as they've come through Y Combinator. Seen a lot of successes and seen a lot of failures. I'm going to help you just understand some of the big mistakes that we see some of these companies doing based on their cash and based on their money.

For every business, whether it's a startup or a mom and pop shop, cash is it's life blood. It's actually surprisingly easy to run out of cash. We see many startups not realize that they have done that until it's too late to actually be able to turn it around and do something about it.

We're going to talk about these three early stage pitfalls. And then we'll talk through another three that as you start to raise money and are starting to think about hiring, some other mistakes that companies make. We're going to look at what the numbers you should be looking at, how often you should be looking at them, whether your expenses are realistic. Then thinking a little bit more about hiring and looking at responsibilities. The first mistake is really not knowing what numbers to look at to make sure that the health of your company is good.

I thought this was an action-packed, fast-paced, dense episode with a lot of moving parts! Is it possible that you were underwhelmed because there was not much fin talk in the episode? Dollar Bill was trying to pull the pharmaceutical trade but it was more about a hilarious side plot than all else.

I also enjoyed, as much as I am rooting for Bryan, how the brains at the SDNY office came together to beat Bryan to Boyd and Spartan-Ives. Finally, I loved the chemistry between Taylor and Oscar and the way they were turned on by a Star Wars conversation and a round of Netrunner! I think they understand each other better than anyone would understand them. Besides, Taylor may have felt better to feel more human than ever after last episode's events. I wonder if they would give Oscar a call 🙂 By the way, the show feels more and more like an ensemble one this season with the leads not having necessarily more screen time than the so-called supporting characters.

Later, Kara calls her to tell her Greg wants to see her, but fails to tell her she is on speaker and Greg is listening before MJ calls him a fat ass! When she informs MJ that Greg heard her, MJ immediately heads to the office. Greg tells her he's not perfect with race, but he's not a racist. He also tells her he's advocated for her and throws in that he has taken note of her routine tardiness to the office and failure to come in early to prepare, coming in just before the show begins. But alas, he also tells her she will be back on the air on Monday.

So she has her hairdresser give her a fresh look with a cute bob, and prepares to return to her audience. On her first day back the teleprompter stops working and she has to freestyle it! But she keeps her composure and does a stellar job like the pro she is! #MJIsBack Though she isn't too happy about the numbers Kara shared later in the episode. The show is in last place, but Kara reminds her they've always been in last place and are competitive in their demographics . But she receives nothing but compliments on her return from friends, family, and social media.

She also starts coming into the office early, beating everyone else in. What you want to avoid is making things personal, right? This one's kind of easy to understand, it is that someone not owning responsibility about the problem. We can't move forward because someone won't admit that there is a problem out there. We defend that we haven't done anything wrong, and therefore there can't be resolution between two people if the other person thinks there's a problem.

This one is a super dangerous one and it's when basically you're like, "Hey I got to problem," and the person just walks away, won't engage, won't talk to you. And so there can be no way to create any kind of resolution. So just as you wouldn't do this without doing some of this, we want to make a plan. I'm going to talk about four different things that we can do that helps avoid and protect us from those four horsemen. This feels pretty straightforward but you want to do this early in the relationship with your co-founders and in the early stages of your company.

Here's our list again of the types of things that we might have problems with. And in the early stages of the startup, let's say, Adora and I are doing a startup together. Then what you want to do is just kind of say like, "Oh, who's responsible for what stuff? Season 2 dives deeper into the choices people make in to achieve and maintain power. The writing is best when it's building in intricate layers of corruption that challenge Izzie, Ron, and Nick to push their moral compass to the edge in order to save the company and, in some situations, their lives. Ron Perlman joins the cast as Wes Chandler, a powerful investor who comes in and changes the dynamic deliciously.

What we think is power quickly shifts as promises are made and broken due to circumstances created by greed. The audience is now solidly invested in Ron, Izzie, and Nick, and it's gutting when these characters make choices that hurt one another on purpose. The stakes for each challenge are so high that you can't help but watch another episode to see how things get resolved. Hands down Edi Gathegi, who plays Ron, the heart of the show. He brings such emotional intelligence and depth to Ron that the audience can't help but love this troubled soul. Controlled by the wealthy 1%, the 21st century "gold rush" resides in the tech industry.

If you're savvy enough to create, market, and sell the next big tech idea, you can achieve the American Dream, but what's the cost? In Episode 1, "Seed Money," we meet Izzy Morales , a brilliant coder who dropped out of Stanford to focus full time on developing her form of cryptocurrency, Gencoin. While seeking funding at a bank, Izzy meets Nick Talman , a loan manager who is unsatisfied with his mediocre life. Initially, Nick wants no part of hiding his crooked father's ill-gotten funds, but Dad convinces Nick that his life is in danger, so Nick decides to try to hide the money by investing in Gencoin.

Just as the money is transferred, Nick unexpectedly receives a late-night visit from Ronald Dacey , one of his father's investors, who is also the leader of a violent Hatian gang. Ronald wants the money he gave to Nick's dad to invest, returned in cash… or else. Season 3 brings in a new psychopathic NSA agent, Rebecca Stroud . The series is in this really great sweet spot where a super scary storyline reveals new reasons why we should all be calling Congress to demand that big tech be regulated, like yesterday. Season 3 is provocative, nerve-wracking, and engaging in a way that surprised me and left me wanting more. The last episode of Season 3 ends in a way that seems like there was going to be a Season 4, but perhaps production was halted due to the pandemic.

As I write this review, StartUp is rated #3 in popularity on Netflix. I hope Netflix is listening and will bring the team together for a Season 4. But this time, please invite some Black, Brown, and women writers into your writers room. In Season 1, the series attempts to display the rich West-Indian culture, which is missed in stories about Black Americans, but the entire writing team are white guys and it shows. Unfortunately, this aspect of the show falls short. I wonder if white male writers find guilty pleasure in writing dialogue where the Black characters use the N-word on each other over and over and over and over again.

I also find it interesting how much, since The Wire, white male writers love to place Black men in gangs and create violent shootouts to resolve conflict. In one episode, Ron ends up killing at least nine Black men with an automatic pistol. The majority of the people who get violently shot and killed by bullets in this series are Black men.

Setting the story in Florida provides the opportunity to invite ethnic diversity into the narrative and is the perfect background for the corruption, backstabbing, and intense characters the Sunshine State is famous for. And in many ways, the character-driven story Marquardt tells is a return to form for a show that excelled most in a debut season focused on a law-student escort played by Riley Keough. You are the CEO of a company that prides itself on protecting the identities of it's users and also what they get up to on the internet. Wes throws a big party in the hopes of wooing new investors. Nick embarks on a secretive mission to save the company.

An encounter with someone from Mara's past sends her into an emotional tailspin. Stroud urges Izzy to insinuate herself back into Araknet. Back in 2002, it was still a novelty to see a star of Sutherland's calibre on TV every week. He wasn't the first, but he was at the start of a trend that saw A-listers migrate to long-running, big-budget series. And while the US audience were slow to appreciate 24, we loved it in the UK, with DVD sales strong enough to convince Fox to commission more episodes of a series they had planned to axe.

And this might be super simple answers but if there is any kind of disagreement, we want to hash that out. So is our workload distributed in an optimal manner today? Do we all feel a high level of dedication and of motivation right now? And then what mechanisms are in place for providing feedback to one another?

Have we carved out time for paying down emotional debt? Do we feel like we can have these level three conversations at any time? Do we have a process in place for digging through this stuff so that we can be honest about where we are in our company? How to work together, everyone fights, so you want to make plan.

You need to figure out, what's your attachment style, what's your roles, what's your goals, and a process before emotions get involved. Use non-violent communication to share honest feedback without criticism. And then pay down emotional debt on a regular basis.

This is the most healthy way that you will make sure that things will not turn into a giant blow up. There's no doubt in my mind that there's probably some issue that the two of you, or three of you, or four of you, or God forbid seven of you are not talking about. The odd thing, too, is that Freeman, as the show's Big Bad, is largely superfluous. The prestige drama tropes swirl around him — antihero! — but the actual story seems to run in the other direction.

It's with Nick , Izzy , and Roland that the cross-cultural founding of GenCorp emerges, and each supporting character offers different strengths to the plot. "Startup" is a hacking thriller grafted onto an action movie, primarily so that Martin Freeman can walk around menacingly while speaking in an unsettlingly bland American accent. Freeman is the FBI agent — and though one cannot laud his choice of roles, he plays Phil Rask with unsettling repressed anger, a lot of it tied up in resentment towards women. Perhaps that is why episode three opens in a brothel. She also noted that showrunner Jesse Armstrong is starting to plot out how to wrap up the series.

"We're at the end of filming season three, so at this point is saying only one more," Pritchett said. However, she implied that Armstrong might stay for a fifth, noting that showrunners often stick around one season season longer than planned—"happens every time." In Startup season 3, Nick Talman and Wes Chandler need Series B funding for their tech company Araknet. Araknet loses over 60 million users because of a mysterious virus in the penultimate episode of the Crackle/Netflix show, which creates major friction between Nick and his investors.

Set amongst the unconstrained, yet opportunist streets of Miami, 'StartUp' weaves a complex and exciting narrative, featuring the high-stakes struggle of what one will do to reach ultimate success. Haha I love the way you describe Axe and Chuck, and in particular how conscience in life may be the brake in the car. I know he will do whatever it takes to bring justice but you are right that they will eat him alive and I think he may be looking for a job at some point this season. Assuming that both Axe and Chuck will save their asses, I don't see Chuck can have him back at the SDNY after this.

Orrin Bach has been inviting him to his team for a while now. I don't think either the people in high finance or law speak like that at all. The show creators have said several times that this is the way they love writing dialogue. They love referring to pop culture from movies to sports to politics to literature as well as writing song lyrics or movie quotes into dialogue. And this immersion in an existence that blurs the line between humanity and technology can be intriguing. It's hard to say, midway through the season, whether the next five episodes will justify the patience it takes to get to that far. If your company prides itself on offering complete privacy, in my mind, there has to be a line. So in the few months since the last season, Araknet is flourishing and has become a fabulous, successful, money making company.
